Teaching Children Who They Are In God
King’s Kids, just the name sends your mind in so many different directions. We are all, as long as we have accepted Christ and know God as our Father, King’s Kids. Yet, we often struggle with things throughout the course of our Christian life because we have failed to grasp this seemingly simple concept—we are King’s Kids!
As Christians, we know that there is a real enemy out there, and one of his strategies is to lie to us (constantly) to steal our peace, joy and confidence in God and God’s Word! If he can get us to believe the lies he feeds us, then we remain bound in emotional and spiritual prisons we may not even realize we are in, let alone know that God wants to free us from them! Knowing who we are in Christ Jesus makes us fully armed and dangerous, and we will easily recognize the enemy’s tactics and not be hindered by them.
We are the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus! Wow! When we accepted Jesus as our Lord and Savior, God covered us with His robe of righteousness. We could not earn it; it was a gift freely given. “For He (God) made Him (Jesus) who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him (Jesus)” (2 Corinthians 5:21). The Bible tells us throughout its pages who God says we are:
- I am a child of God - John 1:12.
- I am a joint-heir with Christ - Romans 8:17.
- I am the temple of the Holy Spirit - 1 Corinthians 6:19.
- I am the apple of His eye - Zechariah 2:8.
- I am an ambassador for Christ - 2 Corinthians 5: 20.
- I am free from condemnation - Romans 8:1.
- I am more than a conqueror - Romans 8:17.
- I am the salt of the earth - Matthew 5:13.
- I am the light of the world - Matt. 5:14, Ephesians 5:8.
- I am a member of the household of faith - Galatians 6:10.
- I am a branch of the True Vine - John 15:5.
- I am the will of God - James 1:8.
- I am in the palm of the Lord’s hand - Isaiah 49:16.
- I am covered by the shadow of His hand - Isaiah 51:6.
- I am loved by God as much as He loves Jesus - John 17:23.
- I am in God’s hand and none can pluck me out - John 10:28.
- I am delivered from sin - Romans 6:7.
- I am free from weaknesses and diseases - Matt. 8:17.
- I am complete in Him - Colossians 1:13.
- I am accepted in Him - Eph. 1:6.
- I am dead to sin and alive to God in Christ - Romans 6:11.
- I am seated in heavenly places in Christ - Ephesians 2:6.
- I am redeemed from the curse of the law - Galatians 3:13.
- I am in Christ - 1 Corinthians 1:30.
- I am hidden with Christ in God - Colossians 3:3.
- I am the elect of God, holy and dearly loved - Colossians 3:12.
No one should doubt who God says they are after reading all of that! We are so important to God. We need to measure what we believe about ourselves with what God says about us in His Word. We need to see ourselves the way God sees us and remind ourselves daily who we are.
Wouldn’t it be awesome if we had grown up knowing exactly who we are in Christ, told over and over by our parents and teachers the words that are written about us in God’s Word? How much more prepared would we have been to face the enemy and his attacks against us?
Our children need to know who God says they are. They need to know now, and they need to be reminded often. My goal as a mother of six of God’s children is that they will always know who they are in Christ so that they won’t have the same struggles I have had. Part of my job as their mother is to teach and train them in the way they should go, (Proverbs 22:6). I think that includes arming them with the weapons they need to defend themselves from the enemy. I can’t think of a better way to arm them than to teach them what God says about them and who they are.
As the administrator of the Children’s Ministry here, I believe that the job of teaching and training is a responsibility of our teaching staff as well. Our goal is to partner with you as parents in raising the children of this church to know who they are and be strong and confident in that knowledge. With that goal in mind, we are changing the name of the Children’s Ministry to King’s Kids. As a parent, I was always humbled at the thought that God thought so much of me and Eric that He entrusted six of His children to us, and as a teacher, I am equally humbled that He allows me to pour into His children. What an honor to serve God in developing the future!
